Taking Credit for the Ideas of Others!

Since it's become a minor hit within a certain segment of Twitter users* I might as well try to ride this wave, right? At the beginning of April, 2008 Fred Wilson proposed creating a "lyric of the day club" on Twitter. Since I had just put together the Tweetmachine bot a couple of days before I bolted on the required additional functionality and let Fred know.

Within 24 hours there were a hundred people following the LOTD bot and posting lyrics, and (as of the end of April, 2008) it's been on a pretty steady growth curve ever since. What's most interesting to me about it is that it feels much more like a community than I expected: people contact one another directly when they see a favorite song quoted, or play off of one another's lyrics to build a theme through the day. It's been a lot of fun to see it develop.

As of the end of April, 2008, there are half a dozen or so other bots on Twitter written based on the @lotd script (information available here), and Daryn Nakhuda and I plan to build out the idea and functionality a bit—should be more exciting updates on this topic before too long.

* Yes, being a "minor hit within a segment Twitter users" is kind of like being "one of the more popular residents of Tuvalu," but it's still pretty cool.
